seven years after injuring his shoulder pitching, kyle had shoulder surgery this morning to repair a torn labrum. we reported to the clinic at 6:45am (all three of us) and kyle was changed, hooked up to monitors and IVs, given a cocktail of drugs, and wheeled to the OR by 7:50am! they don't waste time up there on Gonda 15!! miles and I got to hang out in the family waiting room. it was a lovely, large area equipped with three tvs, four computers, coffee pots, bathrooms, a children's room (very handy for a nursing momma), and a really nifty screen where you can check on the status of your family member. I could actually see that he arrived in the OR at 7:50am, the procedure began at 8:56am, and he was in recovery at 10:11am. they also gave me a pager to page me when he was finished. this allowed us to go down to the subway to get a little breakfast. well...kyle did awesome. he was super groggy coming out of the anesthesia, but that is to be expected. we waited in the little recovery room for about an hour before I discovered that miles had pooped through for the SECOND time that day. are you kidding me? off we went to the family waiting room again. and wouldn't you know it? the dr came to explain the outcome of the surgery while I was gone...grr. now you tell me...does it really make sense to explain in great detail (and with the aide of photos) what you did to a patient if he is practically asleep and doped up on a trifecta of medication? geesh. needless to say, I haven't a clue as to what was actually done in the OR. nice. kyle will be in the sling for another week or two and then start rehab for the next 3-6 months. for now he will settle for sleep and vicodin! thank you for the prayers and well wishes. surgery is always a little unnerving, but we both looked at each other and thanked God that we weren't there for miles. we certainly feel blessed to have a happy, HEALTHY baby!
